3D Models

Explore the visualization and how we made it, and afterwards reflect on the discussion questions.

We created 3D models of typical indigenous dwellings as show in the links to the following tribes:

For the Cherokee townhouses, we took a model created by dukeisi on the site Thingiverse under a non-commercial, attributable CC license, and modified it based on research by Rodning (2009).  Then we published it to Sketchfab to embed it into the website.

For the Sioux teepee, we simply embedded an awesome model created by Krishnan on Sketchfab.

For the Navajo hogans, we created the model from scratch using TinkerCAD, basing the dimensions on research by Jett (1978).  Then we uploaded the .stl file to Sketchfab in order to embed it in the website.

What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of a 3D model vs. other forms of graphic depiction, such as 2D drawings or a textual description?

How does seeing a 3D model of a village from a past time period affect your understanding of that culture for that time, or even now?

How do 3D models relate to other technologies, such as 3D printing and video gaming?

How could 3D be connected to immersive reality, augmented reality, and the internet of things?

We witnessed a time period where everything was "going digital," from music to books to commerce.  How does 3D printing fit into the digital age?  Does it perhaps change the dynamic by pivoting the focus back to physical things?

How can 3D printing be used in the classroom?  How should (or shouldn't) it be used?

How would a 3D printing of a Native American tribe relate to more traditional school projects such as a diorama?  How would it differ?
